Crude Oil Testing Results, and Neighborhood Soil, Wipe, & Air Testing Results

5/21/2018

"Per your request, attached is data regarding sampling done in connection with the Energy Transfer Company (Sunoco) pipeline incident of May 10, 2018. This includes some sample returns from testing in the neighborhood and a sample that shows the composition of the crude oil that was involved in the incident.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission’s Oil and Gas Conservation Division (OGCD) has been on the scene since the incident and over the past weekend. This included witnessing the company’s sampling, doing its own samples to cross check the company’s results, and taking samples at the residences of those who had requested the OCC sample their property in addition to the company.

The OGCD has now sampled all residents who have requested such sampling.   Any resident who wishes to have their property sampled by the OCC in addition to the company but has not yet made the request should contact OGCD Director Tim Baker (t.baker@occemail.com) or OGCD Field Manager Jim Marlatt (j.marlatt@occemail.com). The phone number for both is 405-521-2302.

The OCC sample results are expected within two weeks. The other Sunoco results are expected within the next few days.

OGCD officials say the neighborhood sample results taken thus far (attached) do not indicate any serious issues of concern that would require immediate environmental attention.

However, the OGCD is not a health agency. Any resident with health concerns should contact their health care professional.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact my office."

"There have been questions raised regarding the collecting of samples related to the pipeline incident.

The Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health (CTEH), an independent environmental services company,  has been contracted by Energy Partners to do the sampling and analysis. The OCC, as already mentioned, does its own collection of samples and contracts with a certified lab for the testing.

Again, anyone with questions should not hesitate to contact my office."

Benzene is listed at 466,000 (ppm?) in the Sunoco crude sample. Is this good or bad?

Did anyone else notice that page 1 of the crude oil report is missing? I see pages 2-20 and a data dictionary type report.

May be a fax cover page or useless info? Surely whomever receivd it can confirm for us. Don't really have a reference point for amount of benzene in crude oil.. but it seems to contain equal parts or more of familiar sounding oil/gas goodies.

In addition to wikipedia, there is some more info on Benzene here which I found interesting: https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/sites/toxzine/docs/benzene_toxzine.pdf - Which explains why they had setup air monitoring stations. VOC's evaporate more readily than the other goodies, so basically as I was walking around meeting my equally surprised neighbors after the event those were what we were smelling. Hopefully the levels in the air then would be less than someone who typically is around that stuff as a part of their job all day every day? Surely a few breaths of "huh that smells like chemicals alright" is not statistically significant to health. But what do any of us know.

We have contacted the Corporation Commission regarding the commission of page one. They told us that it was just a cover page but that they will send it to us promptly. Once we have it, we will replace the file including the first page.

The document has been replaced to include page 1.

In response to your question, the units of concentration used in the table for benzene are ug/kg (micrograms per kilogram or parts per billion). As shown in the laboratory results, benzene is a component of crude oil. Common outdoor sources of benzene include tobacco smoke, gas stations, and motor vehicle exhaust, to name a few.

Real-time air monitoring conducted by CTEH® on behalf of Sunoco shows that benzene has not been detected within the Silverhawk neighborhood (see air sampling results previously provided on this post). The crude oil product sample was collected directly from the pipeline and sent off for analysis. Laboratory results indicate the crude oil product contains 466,000 ug/kg benzene (i.e., 466,000 parts benzene per billion parts of oil). The amount of benzene in the crude oil product is not directly representative of the potential amount of benzene in the air following the release.

Given the real-time air monitoring data and the soil and wipe sample results, there is no indication that benzene is present within the SilverHawk neighborhood at levels that would pose a concern to human health. CTEH® and Sunoco will continue to sample throughout the neighborhood.

Is Sunoco going to pay for the potential damage to the pool filters when I wash all of my animals off in there?

Note to self: Do not swim in pool after Xoshi visits

If anyone is found to have let pools into the pool area, they will be subject to fines and termination of their right to use the pool. The pool has already been cleaned and shock has been added to the pool in preparation for opening this weekend. Additionally, the pool has been tested after we filled it and the results are pending.

Yea but my animals are filthy. I haven’t bathed them since the pool closed.
